Reminds me that there used to be, maybe still are, some enlightened prisons in this country that assigned shelter dogs that needed training to the prisoners.
Sacre bleu! The prisoners felt needed, took the dog training seriously, and of course the dogs responded with their amazing unconditional love. There were some weep-worthy statements from the men, like “first friend I ever had.” It was quite the win/win. I had hoped that model would spread, but it’s sure not the right climate now.

On the Oroville Dam (you misspelled badder), those do-gooder, tree-hugging environmentalists had asked the State of California and the Army Corps of Engineers to pave the relief spillway with concrete way back in 2005 because they were worried this exact scenario could happen.

  • DoILookAmused2u? Résistance☨

My proofs the eviro-whackos in Kalifornia got this one right, and the Feds and the State and the money-grubbers got improving the Oroville Dam wrong.

    http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/02/12/oroville-dam-feds-and-state-officials-ignored-warnings-12-years-ago/

    • Juan de Fuca

I’ve never been to the Oroville dam but think it’s strange they only had two emergency spillways, one that was natural earth and right next to the reinforced one. The dams we have down here in SoCal have about 3-4 alternative spillways, and each one is reinforced – our dams aren’t nearly as large as the one in Oroville.

      • DoILookAmused2u? Résistance☨

It was built in 1968 and never improved to modern safety standards.

        • Juan de Fuca

I got that. Since moving and working out here I’ve been amazed at how regulatory req’s aren’t followed as they should be. The myth of California being “over-regulated” is just that – it’s a myth.

          • DoILookAmused2u? Résistance☨

Oh yeah. Go to Kernridge if you want to see a petrochemical environmental disaster, for example.

I think it’s fair to note in the case of this dam, though, it pays to listen when a bunch of tree-huggers are telling you that you need to pave something over with concrete.

      • TrollofReason

Norcal has always skimped on its water management infrastructure. Poorer, and with a strong “conservative” bent, it seems to have an addiction to playing fast and loose with potential for disaster. I should know, I still live here, I could have friggin’ DIED in the unholy shit show of the evacuation.

      • TrollofReason

Oh! Also, fun fact about the geology around the Oroville dam, it flows primarily over stone and cement water ways. Very little of its outflow is absorbed into the aquifers, which makes it just… just wonderful to live in the shadow of its mostly untrammeled outflow.

        • Juan de Fuca

Are you referring to the cement canals that most of California relies on for water? Or the stone water ways that lead to aquifers? That what they lead to here in SoCal.

          • TrollofReason

Either or, really. Point is that the water out of the dam into Feather River has been a perennial, if mostly managed, threat to the major communities here for decades. The water has few soak points, and developers keep being allowed to build homes (and not much else to do with or around them) in flood plains, which further reduces soak rates, and allows flood waters to travel further and faster and with more property damage.

I think he’s mostly an entertainer, a guy who wants audiences to love him. What I’m afraid of is all the guys around him, all the people who whisper in his ears, like the people who whispered in George W Bush’s ears and we got the Iraq War. I just hope Trump stays the egomaniac he is, listens to no-one and then we will all be safe. But if he believes these guys we are all in trouble.”

The “policy makers” are getting their instructions from Russia. The spies are gathering the intel about that. We are fucked.

      • Rick Hill

Well, yeah. It’s a much more complex thing than something simple, like trump

      • Wellstone En Resistencia, Coño

Maybe not. Gathering intelligence means they’re gathering evidence, which is what we need to kick these fuckers out of their policy-making positions and haul them off to prison where they belong.

If only we had a Congress that was interested in doing their job…

          • Wellstone En Resistencia, Coño

This Congress is hopeless. I don’t expect anything from them. We need to make sure we get one in 2018. They’re giving us a head start: they’re deporting lots of people and terrorizing entire communities, mainly in red states. Those people have American-born children who need to become Democratic voters. The message is simple and it’s personal:

Donald Trump and the Republican Party deported your parents. They are your enemies. They hate you more than they hate your parents and that’s why the broke up your family. To them you’re undeserving to be Americans. To us, you are full-blooded Americans just like everyone else and we want you to know we got your back. We need your help, though, we need you to register to vote. We need you to show up on Election Day and help us defeat our common enemy. Your vote is the most powerful weapon in our arsenal. Use it and help us save our country.

          • Ω cynmac will never surrender

I was nerdy in HS, but I made friends with everyone. We had two girl’s bathrooms. One where the “good” girls and one where the “bad” girls went. I started at this school in 10th grade, but having been a military brat when younger, I had learned how to blend. My mom insisted on a Sweet 16 birthday bash, so I invited some of my “bad” girl friends to add flava. My mom asked me “who are those girls in the bathroom and what are they smoking?”. Carla King and her buds had a blast just being invited to a dress-up party and became my lifelong friends. It doesn’t take much to be nice.

Isn’t that unprotected sex? Abstinence is the only way……who needs fruit, nuts and other plant unwanted offspring….

    • Job creation! Think of all the jobs created by having people with Q-tips go around fields pollinating!

  • RC

If NorCal doesn’t get anymore rain for a few days is there anyway they can put a temp fix on that spillway?

    • Maddow alluded to the possibility, but IMO you’d need a big crew working non-stop, day and night.

    • Ω cynmac will never surrender

They have helicopters dropping boulder and gravel. Even Kelly Ripa and her guest host were like, “rlly?”.

      • RC

I thought that was just to fix the erosion from where the emergency spillway was running down the side of the mountain.

        • Ω cynmac will never surrender

I dunno. I got that bit from a morning fluff show. I watch GMA, Kelly, Wendy, The Real, the local news and then TMZ for brain candy. I can’t face real news until early afternoon.

        • bobbert

yes. It’s gonna be hard to do a proper fix because moar rain.

          • RC

maybe they could withhold their next tithe to the feds and use the money for repairs.

    • Snopes Shop

      No. sorry.

  • Toomush_Inferesistance

All I know is, if George Stephanapoulis can take Miller to the woodshed, they’re scraping the bottom of the barrel….

    • Jukesgrrl

What’s next? Ed Henry makes him look like a fool?

  • RC

I think I’ve added Joe Scarborough to my punchable face list.

    • Ω cynmac will never surrender

      Just now?

      • RC

Probably way over due. Just a passing thought as to how much I’ve come to loath that “cover my ass so I’m right, even if I’m wrong.” attitude of his.

    • DuchessD’Orleans

      With votes?

      • RC

        yeah, yeah with votes….

  • resistance_fighter_rosenbomb

Trump’s America has a way of making us all feel like orphaned antelopes.

    • The Flaming Carrot

My parents voted for him, so yeah I kinda am.

      • resistance_fighter_rosenbomb

        Hugs to you!

        • The Flaming Carrot

          Thanks. (Sobbing)

      • RC

Thank god my mother didn’t. All her sisters and all my cousins did but thank god my mother didn’t.

    • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

We are becoming a herd of Cape Buffalo. Stomp. Stomp.Stomp.

    • natoslug

If I had calves as big as antelopes, I’d smuggle myself out of here.

[edit: CALVES, not thighs. Dammit. Blew the misquote.]

  • C4TWOMAN
    • Ω cynmac will never surrender

The end saved the bit. The other cast member copying her and then the scene outside. No spoilers…

    • fishslappingdancer

Damnit, always ‘The uploader has not made this video available in your country’
Nice to know it’s my country but I’d still like to see some of these.

  • Anna Rompage

I have a feeling that Miller is going to grow up to be Grand Moff Tarkin…

    The resemblance is uncanny…

    • thewalkindude

      An insult to Peter Cushing…

      • Jukesgrrl

Miller looks more like something Captain Kirk discovered, not the new, higher-resolution villains.

    • C4TWOMAN

Dunno, Peter Cushing gave Tarkin a sense of drive and inspired purpose I don’t see in Trump’s staff. For a bunch of wanna be fascists, Team Trump is kinda banal and low rent. They can’t even do evil right.
Or maybe they’re doing it righter than they know:

      http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FascistButInefficient

      • CripesAmighty

Thing is, that the real fascists, or more specifically, the Nazis, we’re just that–extraordinarily banal, and low-rent. And yet laid waste to two continents.

    • Tallmutha

Cushing has defined features. Miller’s are just kind of… a smear. With eyes that are dead as an expired snake.

      • AnnieGetYerFun

Miller looks like someone bred Prince William to Prince William’s ugly uncle, then ran the offspring over with a car and reanimated it with some fancy electroshock.

  • MynameisBlarney

    http://crooksandliars.com/2017/02/jim-jefferies-tells-piers-morgan-fck-real

Love ’em or hate ’em, Jim Jefferies doesn’t hold back.

    • eyelashviper

He was great, and finally shut the yap of Piers Morgan, Asshat Extraordinaire.

  • ltmcdies

oh man the things that are important now…reported on The Star’s liveblog of Trudeau’s meet and greet with Trump

“Trump and Trudeau have a 7 or 8 second handshake, or what would be considered regular and ordinary handshake in such a situation. Trump had a 19-second long handshake with Japanese PM Shinzo Abe.”

  • Villago Delenda Est

Stephen Miller joins the cavalcade of Backpfeifengesicht icons!

    • RC

Every once in awhile I read that name too fast and think it says Stephanie Miller and wonder what the hell is going on.

    • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

He is Goebbels without the charm and likability.

      • CripesAmighty

        Eichmann.

    • Vagenda of Rebel Scum
      • natoslug

It’s a talking penis with a bit of black mold.

      • Shibusa

He does make me want to stock up on crucifixes, garlic and holy water.

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

He’s got the wit and sparkle of a young Leona Helmsley.

  • chortlingdingo

The military has been hiding lethal airstrikes in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan for several years and may go back to the start of the “war on terror” in 2001 because reasons!

I feel like the anti-U.S. sentiment in that region is entirely justified.

    • Mahousu

I don’t get it. We keep bombing them and bombing them, and they still don’t like us!

      • guppy06

Maybe I should change my approach to dating…

        • phoenix00

You mean cluster bombs for Valentine’s Day is /not/ an acceptable gift?

  • Alexander Stallwitz
  • Snopes Shop

For one hour, CNN has been reporting on DT’s voter fraud assertion. The FUCK is their problem?

    • Vagenda and Pee-ara

I’m thrilled they’re reporting on it. I want to force Trump’s hand, and MAKE him admit all his “voter fraud” assertions are pure bullshit, just lie his “Obama’s a Kenyan Muslim born in Africa” bullshit.

      • Shibusa

You forget how deeply stupid a majority of Americans really are.

    • Serai 1

It’s kind of an important issue to explore what the FUCK is Trump’s problem?

    • phoenix00

Only? Hillary’s e-mails took up far more dead air.

  • Pierre_de_Fermat
  • jjdaddyo

The more the Trump WH puts that creep-tastic fascist spokes-bot on TV, the more America will recoil in terror.

  • Bitter Scribe

When exactly did being a bigoted asshole become cool, edgy, iconoclastic, etc.?

    • guppy06

      Since BMW.

      • phoenix00

        Bavaria Motoren Werke libelz!

  • chimpevil

Oh look Creepy Miller is holding a press conference.

  • Steven

    ‘dead-eyed and soulless’? Check!

  • Khavrinen

“he wants it known that NOTHING on this Earth will stop God-Emperor Trump”

Ah, OK. Dinosaur-killer asteroid it is, then…

    • phoenix00

North Korea did test another cruise missile, which might be the next best thing.

  • Wendy Belgard Hanawalt

    Thanks. I needed that antelope.

  • Riley Whodat Venable

Thank you Dominic. I love your column.
