Three months ago America met one Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-WA) when she gave one of several thousand GOP rebuttals to President Obama’s State of the Union. She acquitted herself quite nicely, sitting on a couch with a folded American flag visible nearby while mouthing pleasant-sounding gibberish mixed with terrible lies, but she was so adorable while she did it. The wingnuts swooned, the entire “Republicans are waging a War on Women” meme was permanently consigned to the dustbin of history, and a new age of GOP dominance ensued as women flocked to register with the party. There was even talk of the GOP nomination for Vice President in 2016. Not even some pesky ethics investigations could derail this rising star.
Then Cathy ripped off her conservative skin suit and revealed herself to be just another RINO. In an interview withThe Spokesman-Review of Spokane, Cathy suggested that instead of trying to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act, Republicans should focus on fixing some provisions that are not working, and also maybe think about immigration reform that does not consist solely of rounding up the estimated 11 million or so illegals in the country and firing them out of a cannon into the sun.
Needless to say, this went over poorly with the wingnuts, as this headline at Matt Drudge’s Internet Hotspot for Rage-Induced Aneurysms indicates.
Cathy has spent the last couple of days getting roasted online by the wingnuts, who know a liberal RINO socialist Obamabot when they see one. Guess some of the congresswoman’s constituents have yet to follow her to the “Acceptance” stage on the Kubler-Ross scale where Obamacare is concerned.
McMorris Rodgers also suggested that an immigration reform bill could be on the floor of the House by August, and that she would support granting legal status to undocumented immigrants who are working towards citizenship, though she made clear that would not be amnesty of any sort, no siree bob. Yr Wonkette thinks she is wrong about this – by the time August approaches, everyone in Congress will be getting ready to spend the entire month back in their districts campaigning and John Boehner will have endured a summer of the Tea Party threatening to push him out of the Speaker’s chair if he so much as winks in the direction of a reform bill. At which point the Orange One will throw up his hands, being careful not to spill his glass of bourbon while he does so, and that will be that. At least until the next Congress, when the Republicans can start all over pretending they want to do something about the issue of immigration reform but that gosh-darn Obama just keeps poisoning the well.
Sorry not sorry you got the wingnuts mad at you, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, but that is the risk you run when the base of your party is made up of venal sociopaths who would rather take away the newly acquired health insurance of over 600,000 Washingtonians than accept that they lost this one.
Follow Gary on Twitter. He never goes full RINO.
The GOP sounds a lot like Scientology. When you criticize them they run a smear campaign, when you leave they harass you.
I have a family member who sadly got diagnosed with cancer a couple months ago. We hadn't heard anything about treatment, so asked why the delay? "Because of Obama". She had to wait 'til January to get insurance on the exchange. Since then her treatment and everything has proceeded apace.
But -- do I have to say it? -- without the ACA she'd have no insurance and absolutely no way to get insurance with such a pre-existing condition. Yet somehow waiting for the ACA start date was Obama's fault.
When Ted Cruz and his cohorts boast about repealing "every word" of Obamacare, they are sentencing some of their fellow citizens to death. They are the Death Panel.
