Speaking at a confab Thursday in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, former President George W. Bush lightened the mood with a peener joke :
"Former presidents compare their libraries the way other men may compare their, well ...," Bush said to laughs.
Bush said he wondered how the famously profane LBJ "would have handled that."
"He was a funny guy at times."
Yr Wonkette is not going to begrudge anyone named "Bush" a little dick joke, and certainly not a dick joke at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library. If you ignore the "civil rights summit" part of it, anyway. Yeah, still one of his most appropriate public comments.
Maybe this is controversial, on the right because "how distasteful" and on the left because "phallologocentrism," but honestly, we are fairly sure the Republic will survive. And there's no doubting that it's kind of squicky that Dubya chose to let it out at an event honoring civil rights. We also have to agree with WaPo journalist Ruth Marcus, who suggested on MSNBC that he could have done a better job with the punchline. Instead of trailing off, he should have said something about "comparing square footage."
All in all, hard to say what President Trousers would have thought of the tribute -- maybe at any other event, perhaps? LBJ would certainly have appreciated a dick joke, but the timing, not so much. And as we know, throughout his presidency, LBJ was challenged by to find solutions to an awkward fit:

I still wish they had just cut off his Cheney at the root.
