FISCAL CONSERVATISM

House Votes To Defund ACORN, Too!

Following the Senate’s lead, the House of Representatives has now voted to defund the few million bucks per year it gives ACORN, which “specializes in social services, housing preservation and foreclosure mitigation,” because of an entrapment video some racists recently filmed. The vote was 345-75, too! Now conservatives will never gin up a reason to complain about ACORN again!…??

It’s irritating how swiftly this Andrew Breitbart-sponsored, Glenn Beck-promoted Internet stunt has gained traction, no? Jon Stewart even decided to use this as his token Conservative Segment the other night! We’d try to explain the free-floating misguidedness in all of this, but Alex Pareene already did:

So, yes, this decentralized network of low-income community centers is abetting criminal activity, or at least they are telling a 17-year-old-looking white kid in a fur coat to keep his “pimp” money in a tin in the back yard so the government doesn’t get it.

That, actually, is what this fuss is about: ACORN is giving out free advice on tax-evasion to poor people! Finding loopholes in the tax code and exploiting them to hide your criminal activity and society-damaging behavior is for rich people, ACORN. That is one of the few remaining benefits of getting rich and now the leeches want to take that away, too!

Now the federal government will never, ever give any money to ACORN again. Sorry, victims of predatory lending, your lobby just got PUNK’D.

“Glenn Thrush” is a gay porn name, right, like “Lance Fairskin” or “Larry Craig”?

When are they going to vote to block funding to Xe?

  6. In that sneaky racist clip on the teevee that showed Acorn lady officials explaining how to finance a whoreshop, the guy posing as a pimp sounded real white to me. Why are nice black ladies willing to help a nasty white pimp?

    Signed,

    Dazed and Confused

  7. JSDC007: Yes, and hearing aids is something you get from listening to too many assholes.

  8. I thought ACORN already fired those people. What were they supposed to do…execute them?

  9. Come here a minute says at 3:50 pm, September 17th, 2009

Rich conservative white guys were enraged to hear that the proper portion of their prostitution fees were not going to be paid in taxes to federal, state, and local goverment. ACORN is SOCIALISM!!!!!!!!!!

  10. SayItWithWookies says at 3:54 pm, September 17th, 2009

the problem child: As soon as there’s compelling evidence that they’ve committed a crime. That doesn’t include the unprovoked massacre of civilians at that traffic circle, or any other random killings of Iraqis. We’re helping those brown people, you know, so some leeway has to be accorded.

  11. Carl Spakler says at 3:56 pm, September 17th, 2009

Now we can take that $1.7M and give it to some real ‘mericum, god fearin’, non-baby killin’ grassroots group.

Hell, they can give it to me…I’ll carry a dumbass sign about Obama and cry on TV about losing my country for $1.7M (I know, I’m a whore)

  12. Aurelio: Not only were the nice ACORN ladies helping out a white pimp and ho, they were also empowering underage Guatemalans to ply their trade. And where’s the props for their colorblind efforts to help others beat the system?

  13. problemwithcaring says at 4:01 pm, September 17th, 2009

Wait, wasn’t Acorn trying to get the fake ‘ho to PAY TAXES on her prostitution income, even if they were advising to conflate how the income was actually derived?

So the House is pissed that ACORN was trying to get MORE income for government coffers?

  14. the problem child: Are you kidding. Organizations that are a thousand times worse get some legislative attention? Bah hah ha ha. Ah, this place is always good for a laugh.

  16. Liebestod says at 4:09 pm, September 17th, 2009

Having sex is legal, selling is legal, paying tax is legal, being poor is legal, dressing up like a whore or a pimp is legal, being a community organizer is legal, what’s up with the fuss? Those imbecile on the hill were saying that buying a house and starting a small business stuff was good for the economy, like yesterday?

  17. I thank Jeebus that our nation is now free from the threat posed by ACORN and its squirrel overlords. I mean, Christ, those fucking squirrels, they into the attic and your can’t get them out short of going nuclear. Fucking squirrels.
At least now, though, the Congress has freed up that money that went to squirrels, and poor people, so it can get back to the business of giving it to big banks and insurance companies. Just as Jeebus intended.

I’ve always tried, in my heart, to be a good liberal, but I’ve always thought ACORN was a bunch of idiots.

  19. Carl Spakler says at 4:13 pm, September 17th, 2009

I wonder how many ACORN offices our little sexual deviant conservatard pimp and whore got tossed out of in order to splice together their little doc-drama…very Michael Moore-equse of them

Meanwhile, looks like another community organizing group could sure use the money.

  21. AbstinenceOnly Ed says at 4:32 pm, September 17th, 2009

Maybe ACORN can get back in good graces with the gov’t if they change their name to AIGCORN.

  22. SlipperyDick says at 4:32 pm, September 17th, 2009

ACORN should reform under a different name, say, Black Water Social Security, yeah, that would be a good one. They should follow the lead of Blue Cross Blue Shield and create a loose federation of non profits, one in each state. Then they should pool their resources and go after federal grants to help poor people.

  23. GreatOldOnesParty says at 4:38 pm, September 17th, 2009

Darkness: fuck, they’re still giving Blackwater (or “Xe, a fragrance for mercs”) millyins of $$ and they ACTUALLY kill people. But the people they kill aint U.S.Americans so they must be trrrists so it’s ok.

  24. Min: Hanging from a big tree in any of the southern states is preferred.

  25. queeraselvis v 2.0: FUCK THEM. And don’t insult community organizing like that ever again. OK, I’ll lighten up. But don’t do it again. Pleeeeeeeeeeze.

  26. Big Al1317 says at 4:47 pm, September 17th, 2009

Well you know Prez Obama once had something to do with Acorn so the wingnuts had to bust ‘em just because they could. They must think the Prez owns them or something.

  27. HomoPolitico says at 4:51 pm, September 17th, 2009

I worked as an ACORN organizer for 8 months. I was working 65 hours a week, getting paid a salary that broke down (per hour) to less then minimum wage. I paid for my own gas to and from work and “turf” even though they were on opposite sides of the county. I let them move me to Delaware, for fucks sake. The reason I put up with this is because ACORN is supposed to look great on the resume. It shows your progressive cred, that you arent afraid of hard work, and that you know organizing in and out.

And now this fucking BULLSHIT…These Alinsky-Model-Of-Organizing fetishists…these asshats who abuse their own employees while fighting for workers rights…do this to me. Now when I apply for jobs I’ll have to explain that, no, I wasn’t helping organize child prostitution rings. Yes, two of the ACORN offices that I worked for did but I had quit by that time because I like eating and paying my rent.

Fucking ACORN can suck my left acorn. Their methodology is outdated crap, their labor practices are hypocritical (workers of the movement are workers too, jerkwads), and now they have no one to blame but themselves for their downfall.

  28. btwbfdimho says at 4:54 pm, September 17th, 2009

So ACORN can’t have a penny because its employees know how to cheat the IRS, but Wall Street, that specializes in creative accounting, got hundred of billions in bailout money. Nice job, congressmen.

  29. smarticvs says at 5:00 pm, September 17th, 2009

Acorn is hardly a “decentralized” network. In fact, it is pretty much the oppoisite. It is a national organization with state and local chapters with organizers who “primarily report to the ACORN national office, and only secondarily to the local board. [T]he national head organizer [Wade Rathke] has tha ultimate authority to hire and fire ALL staff (emphasis in the original). Acorn senior staff wield enormous influence in choosing campaigns and strategies. Heidi Swarts, Organizing Urban America, 2006.

  30. hobospacejunkie says at 5:05 pm, September 17th, 2009

Good thing so many people worked so hard to elect Democratic majorities so they can roll over and let the fringe right continue to control the debate on pretty much everything. You can elect a Democrat to office but you can’t grow it a spine,

  31. smarticvs says at 5:07 pm, September 17th, 2009

I think its ironic that the only reason you worked for ACORN was for “progressive cred” and because it looks good on a resume. You got exactly what you deserved, chump.

converse: Oh worry not. I said it with my tongue planted so firmly in my cheek that I could taste my lower intestine.

  33. HomoPolitico says at 5:18 pm, September 17th, 2009

smarticvs: “the only reason I put up with this” does not equal “the only reason I worked for ACORN”. I worked for them because they fought for the rights of the poor when and where no one else would. I stayed with them because, fuck yes, I’m trying to build a career in progressive politics. It was the was probably the second time I had a gun pulled on me that made me reconsider. Excuse me for not using my education to become an investment banker. Also excuse me for having life goals beyond my current employment.

  34. AnnieGetYourFun says at 5:20 pm, September 17th, 2009

HomoPolitico: Delaware? That’s just fucking sick.

  35. smarticvs says at 5:33 pm, September 17th, 2009

HomoPolitico: Well, since you are looking to build a career in progressive politics, than exploiting an organization that purports to help poor people to pad your resume, and then bailing on it because things got a little to ghetto for you, was the perfect start. I predict a bright future.

  36. Way Cool Larry says at 5:34 pm, September 17th, 2009

An ACORN dude says the video was overdubbed to make it seem like the ladies were responding to prostitution and sex trafficking– when something else was being said. This seems plausible to me, as the scenario was too outrageous.

The ACORN tapes just prove that sarcasm doesn’t play well on TV. I’m sort of surprised that Stewart didn’t see that. I mean, if you had some white kid in his mother’s fur pretending to be a pimp, would you have acted any differently?

And, as has been pointed out throughout this thread, in the end, ACORN was being very Conservative. Letting people know how they could own property and not pay taxes. Hell, if this was Bank of America, they would be getting TARP funds.

  41. Now that they’ve buried Acorn in the back yard, maybe the Rethugs can finally grow wood.

SlipperyDick: The ironic part is that is vaguely similar to what the astroturfing group FreedomWorks (which helped bring us all those wonderful Teabaggers) actually does to fund itself, only notably less evil. FreedomWorks sells health insurance policies, through which policyholders automatically become members of FreedomWorks, to ensure their mailing list is well stocked.

When the wingnuts call for someone’s head, given that we’re in power, we should also call for one of their heads. You know, like a prisoner swap. They want ACORN defunded? Fine; so long as we get rid of the Office of Faith-based Initiatives or whatever the hell it’s called? They want Van Jones? Fine; cut down Robert Gates for good measure. If they want to play a war of attrition, they ought to suffer, too. How about this? Every time they call for the head of a czar, how about we just make a new position for another czar to set ups shop, and make the position even more insulting and innocuous just to piss ‘em off? Seriously, they want the Green Czar? Then we’ll just make a Low-Income School Lunches Czar, or some bullshit like that. Or a National Fitness Czar, or National Propane & Propane Accessories Czar.

I guess when these conservetards demand that we throw out the baby with the bathwater, we do what they say, right? Democrats and Liberals; growing a fucking pair, already.

  48. Crank Tango says at 10:38 pm, September 17th, 2009

hobospacejunkie: yeah we blow. If we’re not snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, we are winning elections and letting the repubes call the shots.

I just wonder how far we are going to let minority rule go? How many senate seats could we have and still have no power? 75? Not like that’s ever gonna happen anyway. 2 years of this and people will let republicans get elected because at least they make things happen. Horrible things, to be sure…

  49. Scaggsvillain says at 7:13 am, September 18th, 2009

  50. Common Sense says at 10:54 am, September 18th, 2009

Wait are you all (mostly all) really overlooking the fact that so far 5 of these offices not only didn’t call the police when the pimp brought up child prostitution was his plan, but they openly helped them to hide it and even get a friggin tax break by claiming the children as dependants? I mean I know that you all hate anything to do with the right wing, but seriously, if one of your ranks fucks up big time, don’t be giant douchebags by trying to ignore it and be snarky towards the other side.

And just for the record seeing as this is my first post and I will probably get banned for not being a frothing liberal progressive. I am not a Republican, I have conservative values and I have liberal values. I am what you would call a “normal person” who isn’t frothing at the mouth on either extreme.

  53. Common Sense says at 12:12 pm, September 18th, 2009

What? I play the victim? What in the hell are you even talking about? Child prostitution is one of the most vile things in existance, you know what happens to pedophiles in prison? Even the bad people of our society looks down on them. Yet somehow you think that it is more important that this orginazation is a progressive, liberal, Democratic front and anything bad that they do that is uncovered is obviously just some right wing idiots trying to stir up trouble. You must not have children. Granted there are very few things which should be off limits to politicism, I just happen to think that child prostitution should be one of them. Any human being should be outraged and irate about the actions of this group, be it a few bad apples or what appears to be a culture of looking the other way no matter how bad the transgressions against our society might be.

Is that about right? Let me know if I missed anyone I hate.
