Goodbye, Interns! (Here Are Some Places To Take Your Folks Before You Leave Town)
The mass exodus of interns from DC is right around the corner, and it’s often preceded by the obligatory visit from mommy and daddy. Considering that these interns have provided us with numerous entertaining moments this summer, and organized the hell out of file cabinets, and did such an amazing job stapling, we figured we could do at least one nice thing for them before they leave.
As a goodbye gift, here are some suggestions for expensive restaurants and activities to go to with mommy and daddy that aren't affordable on a measly intern stipend.
Tabbard Inn: The Tabbard Inn has one of thebest brunches in DC, and like all good places, the food is expensive. Make sure to get a reservation and head over for homemade donuts, delicious omelets and tasty desserts.
Founding Farmers: Part of this whole "You should know what you’re eating" phenomenon, Founding Farmers offers fresh, delicious food. Take mommy and daddy and be sure to try to the ribs, bacon-wrapped dates, or the roasted vegetable and avocado sandwich. Their burger is also considered to be one of the best in DC. Expect a big, hearty meal.
Central: This place is this year's James Beard Award winner for best new restaurant, so it's the perfect destination if you want to impress your parents. The mussels, sea bass and lamb shank are all very tasty, and be sure to try to the chocolate lava cake for dessert. Yum.
Rasika: Most Indian food in DC comes in the form of super big buffets, but if you’re looking for a fine dinning Indian food experience, you should check out Raskia. The wine list is extensive, the black cod with anise sauce is mouthwatering, and the Palak Chaat -- crispy spinach, with sweet yogurt, tamarind, and date chutney -- is a perfect mix of crunchy and sweet, and may be one of the best appetizers in the District.
Newseum: Admission is 20 bucks (not exactly affordable for even the young professional class) but mom and dad will probably be so excited that you want to something "cultural" that they will for sure swing for it. And you win too, because the museum is really that good. The Phillips Collection and the Corcoran (expect on Saturdays!) also charge, so have mommy and daddy take you there as well.
Kennedy Center: Plenty of great shows are happening at the Kennedy Center right now, including the highly acclaimed The Color Purple. Tickets aren’t cheap at $25-$90, but we’re sure mom and dad would love to share an evening at the theater with their offspring.
Nationals Game: Tickets for the game can be cheap at anywhere from $5-$20, but if mom and dad are in town, why here's an opportunity to actually see the players and not just tiny blobs off in the distance.
