So there are basically two weekends in this month, January 2009, that are count-y ones: last weekend, as you and what’s left of your liver will recall, was New Year’s Eve; next weekend, hordes of earnest young people will swarm your streets, your bars, and, for a fee, your futons for a glimpse of Rick Warren. So this weekend, take advantage of your DC: go see Lloyd Dobler (the band) and Bette Davis (the person) and Dupont (the place).
Friday:
- Rock-y, Latin-y Lloyd Dobler Effect at the Black Cat. $12; 8 PM. [9:30 Club]
- Local experimental group Imperial China will be at the Velvet Lounge. 9 PM; $8. [Velvet Lounge]
- Check out the “creative space” Flashpoint, at which there will be candy and women — and only some of the latter are paintings! 6 PM – 10 PM. [DCist]
- Most galleries in Dupont are celebrating the second Friday of the month with a First Friday celebration, during which usual First Friday activities will take place. [DCist]
Saturday:
- See Bette Davis in Jezebel and then Hallelujah, one of the first first studio films with an all black cast. It stars Roland Burris, as himself. Jezebel at 1 PM, Hallelujah at 3 PM; both free. [Washington Post]
- The British-sounding Telograph is visiting all the way from sounds-like-Britain to play at the Iota Club. Go see them. 9 PM; $10. [Iota Club & Cafe]

You have missed that the CHOSEN ONES among us have inaugural volunteer training this weekend. I think I will be assigned to out single sheets of one ply TP at one of the 5000 porta potties(or at all of them). What an honor- especially if I can wear my special commemorative credentials and my special red volunteer hat.
So is Wonkette gonna have a run-down of good bar-hopping options for Jan. 20??? Will there be such a thing, or are we headed for the biggest clusterfuck ever?
All of your readers live outside of DC. Who was this post written for? I recommend you post about the San Francisco Bay Area, it seems like everyone is from there, or pretends to be. I think there will be lots of riots this weekend, so that should be fun.

Actually, I would like Wonkette barhopping tips for next weekend too.
I am one of those loathsome out-of-towners who plans on importuning a hapless cousin who happens to be a DC resident, toward whom I’ve demonstrated no particular interest in visiting before. Free couch!! And I get to stand somewhere symbolic but chilly, and watch the festivities on giant outdoor teevee screens, and then demand to be taken someplace fashionable but cozy for dinner!
I need somehow to make up for my mawkish gawkishness with suggestions on how to blend in with the locals–which all of us non-locals can then slavishly follow.

Well, Imperial China did play this week, but it was last night at the Black Cat, not tomorrow night at Velvet Lounge.
Is Ben’s Chili Bowl as good as I’ve heard? Sounds like the place for the expected weather.
[re=213661]chascates[/re]: I don’t think so although the last time I was there – so was Adrian Fenty- but I’m not sure he was eating the food. It was right before his election. However, it is a famous place and near newly trendy U street so some younger Wonketteers should weigh in. Me- I am carrying peanut butter on whole wheat, kashi bars and a water bottle. I will sell said items to starving tourists for the price of a meal at Poste or Zatinya.
Ben’s is very tasty. I prefer the half-smoke without chili; the chili is excellent, but Ben’s makes the best half-smoke in DC and it’s sort of gilding the lily. So what you do is get a half-smoke without AND a hot dog with, and then burp deliciousness the rest of the day. Avoid the milk shakes, though; they’re pretty lame.
BTW, on Sunday you can see a pretend inauguration, as the military practices the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol a couple times starting in the dark, and then runs the parade up Pennsylvania Avenue without the floats and high school bands and stuff (just the military units), around 9 a.m. No Rick Warren, unfortunately, but they will have a soldier with a “Barack Obama” sign hanging around his neck pretend to be sworn in.
