I mean, at the end of the day the running mate selection process only has a tangible impact on the second line of bumper stickers. America has collectively held its breath for an entire week for the political equivalent of the coolest girl in the eighth grade announcing her new BFF.
I think it’s Abe Vigoda. (A) He’s a military veteran; (b) He’s Jewish, which helps with the pro-Israel crowd; and (C) He’s alive.

mattbolt: I used to work with a guy who voted for Bush in 2000. He didn’t care much for Bush, but his reason was that he really liked Cheney, and that since getting elected in a year ending with zero pretty much guarantees assassination, it wouldn’t be long for President Cheney to get inaugurated. I swear I am not making this up.
I realize this guy’s opinion is not average. He is in fact the only person I’ve ever known who’s admitted that a running mate influenced his decision. As much as I loathe Bush, I have to say I’m not a fan of my old coworker’s line of reasoning, but there it is.

mattbolt: Unfortunately when the presumptive nominee has few accomplishments and has been campaigning for a little over 50% of the time when in elective office, the VP choice may be all that matters in changing someone’s mind. This is the world we live in. God I wish we had a parliament. We would not have to deal with all this silly superdelegate stuff.
If Hillary gets it, that will make it - let’s see now - 32 years since there was an election without a Bush or a Clinton on the ticket with no end in sight. That fact alone makes me a little queasy every time.

mattbolt: I think Cheney had more influence on invading Iraq than Bush. So there’s that, for starters.
You know, about a week ago I realized how incredible it would be for him to pick Hillary after all of this. If he had picked her in June, or even suggested that it was possible no one would have cared. She’d totally overshadow him, and it would probably make him seem weak.
But by waiting till the last possible day, avoiding any suggestion that he was interested in picking her, floating other names, etc., he’s going to completely own the news cycle leading into the convention. He’ll also seem strong, thoughtful, willing to take a strategic position etc. rather tan just seeming kinda weak.
That said, DON’T DO IT, BARRY!
