CAMPAIGN STRATEGERIES

  • HAS ANYBODY TOLD THEM MCCAIN ISN’T RUNNING AGAINST CLINTON? “Sen. John McCain’s allies have seized on a new and aggressive line of attack … casting the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee as an opportunistic and self-obsessed politician who will do and say anything to get elected.” [Washington Post]

Schmidt said Friday, “When politicians say one thing and then do another, like Senator Obama has done, voters wonder about the steadfastness of the character of the person sitting in the Oval Office.”

Erm . . . Why bring GW Bush into this? Or does McCain strategist Schmidt figure that Obama’s as good as elected already?

The McCain campaign is just getting disgusting with its whining.

I mean, really? General Clark said that being shot down and being a POW doesn’t equal executive experience, and now McCain is painting it as though Clark said that McCain lied about being a POW or something.

But Obama has no backbone. Instead of standing up for Clark, defending him, he’s distancing himself. Gah. Can we go back to the primaries when Obama was trying to win my vote, instead of my uncle’s?

  6. “opportunistic and self-obsessed politician who will do and say anything to get elected”

John, dude, you went and kissed up to those guys who said crap about your adopted daughter.

“And believe me, cynical opportunism is something John McCain can recognize is familiar with.”

  8. SayItWithWookies says at 1:51 pm, June 30th, 2008

Oh, there’s nothing more disgusting and unseemly in a candidate for president than the desire to win the election. I mean, how brazen can you get? Therefore you should vote for McCain — he’s had the integrity to be in the lobbyists’ pockets for his entire career, regardless of how often he’s been painted as a maverick by his unscrupulous opponents.

“I spent the next 3 years in a POW camp, forced to subsist on a thin stew made of fish, vegetables, prawns, coconut milk and four kinds of rice. I came close to madness trying to find it here in the States, but they just can’t get the spices right.”

I’m waiting until the Obama people unlimber the savings and loan thing from last century and dump it like so much cow shit on McCain’s head. The timing could hardly be better.

  11. ronaldpagan says at 1:58 pm, June 30th, 2008

Oh my god Obama is a politician! Lord only knows what horrific things would happen if we got a politician elected into the White House! Thank Baby White Jesus we have so many people to vote for who are not politicians, or it would be a terrible day for democracy indeed.

    floraway: Change That Won’t Offend

  15. floraway: Totally agree. I was cheering Clark for pointing out the simple fact that McCain’s military experience does not bear on setting strategy and other issues the CIC must face — and Clark is someone who actually understands the military context. It’s really unfortunate that Obama would distance himself from that. I was so hoping he would pick Clark as his VP. Are my hopes now shattered?

  16. freakishlystrong says at 2:03 pm, June 30th, 2008

I guess calling him an uppity Mooslum Negro wasn’t resounding with the electorate enough?

  17. Truculent: Just hope that when someone does hold the S&L mess out for inspection Obama won’t distance himself from that set of facts too.

  18. Godless Liberal * says at 2:03 pm, June 30th, 2008

It’s as if there is a checklist of charges that the Republican candidate for any office has to levy against his or her Democratic opponent.

    That isn’t aggressive, it’s a fucking rerun.

  19. Uncle Al says at 2:04 pm, June 30th, 2008

And of course, if McCain said the sky is orange, the Washington Post would simply report it, adding that “some Democrats disagree,” rather than pointing out that McCain is insane. That’s been their MO with Chimpy for 8 years.

  20. AngryBlakGuy says at 2:05 pm, June 30th, 2008

…as time goes on the whole “you dont know what will surface” that Hillz(and Faux News) were peddling about Barry seems more and more ridiculous. Everything they attack Barry with seems nonsensical and desperate. They REALLY don’t have anything left!!!

  21. Delicious says at 2:06 pm, June 30th, 2008

Meh. There will come a point when the gloves and everything will come off and kicking McCain in the balls repeatedly for no good reason will become perfectly acceptable. Expected, even.

  22. shortsshortsshorts says at 2:06 pm, June 30th, 2008

WALNUTS CERTAINLY ISN’T the kind of guy who will say anything to get elected. After all, he can’t talk with George’s throbbing member shoved deep into his oral orifice.

Atoz: It’s just made for primetime. It happened long enough in the past that many folks have forgotten about it. At the time it was one hell of a big deal and sleazy to the third power. “McCain, a scumbag like Nixon but with better financial connections.” Maybe they’re holding off until after the convention

  25. MoodProcessor says at 2:14 pm, June 30th, 2008

At least the objective comparison between POWness and CIChood has been aired. Yeah, we all knew that being a POW does not mean you’re qualified to be president.
But as will all things, the actual goal of this campaign - Choosing The Next POTUS - has been squashed under all of the rhetoric, pointing and wagging.
This is a presidential election right? Not a manly American contest? Right?

  26. HeelingToPort says at 2:15 pm, June 30th, 2008

shortsshortsshorts: While the religious right have theirs shoved up McCain’s ‘other’ orifice. Oh Jeez, what a disgusting picture. I think I need to go pray to the great ceramic god.

  27. ronaldpagan says at 2:27 pm, June 30th, 2008

“It’s a statement of fact that he discards people, and he discards positions when they become inconvenient for him,” Schmidt said Friday.

This one, like Karl Rove’s country club line, is the GOP’s attempt to paint Obama as that popular kid in sixth grade who totally used you for your math homework but didn’t even come to your birthday party.

“What’s becoming clear in this campaign,” he said, is that Obama “has demonstrated that there is no position he holds that isn’t negotiable. He will say or do anything if it furthers his political purposes.”

I like this quote because it is true. Obama will do and say literally ANYTHING to get elected, including selling out his stance on torture and immigration and tax cuts…oh wait that might not have been him. But anyway, he is SHAMELESS. SHAMELESS and BRAZEN.

Atoz: It’s shitty that Clark’s statement of this fact was painted as Clark pretending McCain had no military record, but it definitely wasn’t the most tasteful thing to say. It’s like when we said Hillary’s being married to the president for eight years doesn’t equal experience. Absolutely true, but Obama can’t say that, and he has to reject the people who do, because he doesn’t want to antagonize people.

  28. ronaldpagan says at 2:30 pm, June 30th, 2008

Also, y’all, do you think shit would be worse if Barry hadn’t been such a little pander bear lately? I’m inclined to think that if he’s getting screwed either way, he may as well take the high ground and not sell out his principles.

But then maybe if, say, Barry had supported the Supreme Court’s decision about the death penalty for child rapists, we would be seeing an onslaught of Willie Horton style “Barry cornholes little white boys” attacks that would be way worse than the potshots the GOP is taking at Barry now. Thoughts?

  29. hopeforbill says at 2:38 pm, June 30th, 2008

Why do they say “He’s a calculating politician” as an insult? Is there another kind? Don’t they also call him “Frighteningly naive”? Can you be both?

  30. eatsshootsleaves says at 2:39 pm, June 30th, 2008

What’s really fucking frustrating for me is that, recently, Obama has not been aggressive at ALL to McCain. Every thing that comes out of one of McCain’s associates’ mouths has been filled with vitriol and condemnation, and every response Obama gives is “Hope hope new kind of politics hope change hope move forward.” He needs to take lessons from Hillary for how not to be a pussy.

HeelingToPort: There aren’t any orifices left for the American public! He’s going to have to drill another hole.

  32. eatsshootsleaves says at 2:43 pm, June 30th, 2008

ronaldpagan: I don’t think he’s selling out all his principles, personally. The only thing I’ve objected to recently was the FISA thing. As far as taking public financing and opposing the DC gun ban, I cheered. It’s just that, as I said, he’s being way too cautious. I mean, really, he’s been campaigning for like two years and he can’t handle town halls with McCain? Really?

  33. ronaldpagan says at 2:50 pm, June 30th, 2008

hopeforbill: He was “frighteningly naive” when he was running against Hillary. Now by defeating her he has absorbed her calculating spirit. He is a naive mystery inside a calculating enigma wrapped in a dangerously sexy black man who will steal your daughters.

eatsshootsleaves: True story. Or even his nomination day speech; that was a pretty powerful indictment of McCain. And we were all like, “See, he was taking it easy on Hills because she is a fellow Democrat. He is going to step it up for the general election.” But, alas, he is back to being a vag.

  34. ronaldpagan says at 2:57 pm, June 30th, 2008

Sorry about all the long comments today, kittens.

eatsshootsleaves: I don’t think he’s selling out ALL his principles at all…his lack of conviction is nothing compared to McCain’s. Public financing was a stupid promise to make, that he shouldn’t have made in the first place (which is exactly how he’s gonna feel about promising to cut taxes for people making $200,000 a year.) I’m with you and Barry about the gun ban, but I did think siding with Scalia about the death penalty was pretty shameless.

Yeah, the town hall thing is bullshit. I know it’s supposedly McCain’s element, but the more contrast the better. Is there ever gonna be a time where they put them next to each other and Barry doesn’t come out looking infinitely better, policy-wise and charisma-wise? Refusing to do town halls is just playing up the stereotype that Barry can only deliver when he’s in front of thousands of fans and the Arcade Fire is opening for him.

Although, I heard the reason Barry rejected the town halls is because Walnuts’ proposal was ridiculously excessive and he flat-out refused to bargain, just so Barack would be the one who looked bad when he turned the proposal down. Also, didn’t Walnuts want ZERO traditional debates in his proposal? Or is that something I made up?

  35. eatsshootsleaves says at 3:07 pm, June 30th, 2008

ronaldpagan: If that’s true, Obama could have made clear that he was offering a less stupid proposal than debating just once on the 4th of July. Then McCain would have looked like the asshole.

  36. ronaldpagan says at 3:11 pm, June 30th, 2008

eatsshootsleaves: What time is the July 4th debate? Am I gonna have to choose between fireworks and McCain getting his sagging ass handed to him?

  37. eatsshootsleaves says at 3:19 pm, June 30th, 2008

ronaldpagan: It’s not happening now, I believe. We’re going to have to wait for post-convention for that, I think.

Speaking of which, McCain will probably already have his ass handed to him at the time of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Because the only thing I’m looking forward to more than Obama’s convention speech is McCain’s, a week later.

  38. ronaldpagan says at 3:25 pm, June 30th, 2008

eatsshootsleaves: There was also a foreign policy debate…but still, you’re right, Obama could have done a couple other town halls. I’m a little disappointed. For one thing, it would have given us all something to pay attention to.

I already have my drinking game planned for McCain’s convention speech. Drink every time he mentions Vietnamese POW camps.

  39. eatsshootsleaves says at 3:29 pm, June 30th, 2008

ronaldpagan: I thought the foreign policy debate WAS the planned 4th of July debate?

Every time McCain smiles creepily at something he’s not supposed to, take a shot.

  40. SayItWithWookies says at 3:37 pm, June 30th, 2008

ronaldpagan: I think part of the calculation (the deliberate, cynical, malicious calculation, that is) of the Obama camp is that since McCain can’t legally spend any money between now and the GOP convention, McCain’s offer (his generous, kind, basket-of-puppies offer, that is) to have a series of debates would have amounted to free campaign time for McCain to shape his message to the public. Since Obama’s going to do that regardless of whether he accepts the debates, refusing was a no-loss proposition for Obama. That’s just a theory on my part, though.
