Rudy Giuliani used to be the mayor of New York City, a socio-liberal bastion of Communism. He got elected despite being a Republican because, well, he wasn’t all that Republican-y. But, now he wants to win the right to challenge the inevitable Hillary juggernaut and so he keeps telling everybody what kind of delicious Republican goodness he brought to New York. The problem? He might be exaggerating just a tetch.

Giuliani claims that he cut taxes 23 times as mayor. While it’s true that New Yorkers got 23 tax cuts, the Boston Globe reports that 7 of those tax cuts came from Albany, not Gracie Mansion, and Giuliani actively opposed the largest of the other tax cuts for which he claims credit. Giuliani’s camp claims that he lobbied hard for the state level tax cuts and only opposed the large local one as a budget tactic, so he totally can claim credit for them.

Much like the religious right is lining up behind him despite his support for gay and abortion rights, fiscal conservatives like The Club For Growth is emphasizing in its white paper how much he was able to do on fiscal and tax issues in an unfriendly environment. Apparently, the main principle of both social- and fiscal conservatism is winning.
